RED OAK’S “ROOF” GETS AWARD PRESS: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 6, 2005 Red Oak Realty’s charitable foundation, Red Oak Opportunity Foundation – ROOF – was presented with the Distinguished Business Partner award for 2005 by the Berkeley Public Education Foundation at their annual Spring Luncheon at Hs Lordships restaurant on May 6, 2005.
The award was given in recognition of ROOF’s contributions to the Public Education Foundation and other public education causes over the years. Since its founding twenty years ago, ROOF has contributed more than $400,000 to education, housing, and other programs meeting urgent local community needs. “ROOF puts the health of our community front and center for us in a personal way. We want to give back to the communities where we work and live. Our clients drive it home every day with their deep concern about the quality of our public schools and the programs available to kids, our senior citizens, the homeless,” said Peter Campbell, chairman of ROOF. The award was presented by Carolyn Henry Golphin, President of the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce, and received on behalf of all contributors to ROOF by Bob Blumberg, Red Oak Realty partner and vice chair of ROOF. “Those dedicated people who work with our kids day after day to improve public education deserve our support,” said Blumberg, a former Berkeley High teacher. “We want them to know that there are those in the business community who recognize and appreciate their efforts. We are pleased to do what we can to help.” In 1985, Red Oak’s owners established ROOF as a non-profit charity, and encouraged their agents to contribute a portion of their commissions at the close of a home sale. The company matches the agents’ contributions, and a committee selects deserving organizations annually. One-third of each year’s grants is awarded to housing programs, one-third to public education, and the remainder is allocated to organizations ranging from Gardens on Wheels to the Berkeley Symphony. In recent years, Red Oak clients, colleagues, and business affiliates have been inspired to contribute to ROOF as well, enabling last year’s grants to exceed $70,000. ROOF’s previous awards include recognition by Representative Barbara Lee for contributions to the Marcus Foster Education Institute (Oakland), and Berkeley former mayor Shirley Dean’s declaration of Red Oak Realty Week in January of 1997.
